The majority of rotating machinery faults — including bearing defects, imbalance, misalignment, looseness, and resonance — produce detectable vibration signatures well before catastrophic failure occurs. A bearing defect, for example, can be detected weeks or even months in advance when the right measurement techniques are applied. This means that with a structured vibration monitoring program, most unplanned shutdowns are entirely preventable.

Partial Discharge Detection

Partial discharge (PD) in high-voltage switchgear, transformers, and cable terminations emits ultrasonic energy in the 20–100 kHz range. Acoustic imaging pinpoints the exact source of PD activity on live equipment — without contact, without shutdown, and without risk to personnel. Early PD detection prevents insulation breakdown, arc flash events, and catastrophic transformer failure.

Compressed Air & Gas Leak Detection

Compressed air leaks are one of the largest sources of energy waste in industrial plants — studies estimate 20–30% of compressed air is lost to leaks. The Fortic camera instantly locates leaks in pipework, fittings, valves, and pneumatic systems from a safe distance, even in noisy plant environments where traditional ultrasonic probes struggle.

Did You Know?

The moisture content of the liquid insulation (the oil) is only a partial indicator of the amount of moisture in a transformer. The paper insulation has 100 times or more affinity for moisture compared to the oil. The paper's lifespan is cut in half every time the moisture content doubles.

This is important because the paper is the primary limiting factor in the life of a transformer. Moisture in the paper will accelerate the oxidation process — compromising the paper, weakening the unit's efficiency, decreasing dielectric strength, increasing the risk of flashover, and eventually leading to failure. The paper's lifespan is cut in half every time the moisture content doubles. And every year of delay in fixing the problem chips away at approximately two years of reliable service.

Recommendation: It is best practice to filter your transformer oil every 2 years to maintain dielectric strength, remove moisture and contaminants, and extend the life of both the oil and the paper insulation.
